Is There A Method For Comparison Grocery Shopping?

9 June 2009 136 views 4 Comments

I am trying to save money on groceries and right now I go to 2 different stores. One for wine and specialty items and the other for everything else. With the gas prices so high going to 2 stores is not such a hot option. How can I compare and go to just one store and have a lower over all grocery bill?
Also, I see coupons but there never seems to be coupons for the things I buy? Is there such a thing as a coupon for fresh fruits, veggies etc.? Does getting the sale papers help?
Thanks!

Get the sale papers for a few stores in your area and compare the specials. Plan your meals around them. Some stores also double coupons.
One of the ways i have cut down drastically is to make a list and stick to it. No impulse buys. I may change brands or sizes of packages, but nothing that isn’t on the list.
I keep a pad on the counter in the kitchen and add things to the list as I use them so I’m not running out of things.
I have also learned to compare not only the price of the item I am buying, but the unit price. There have been times where it was cheaper to buy 2 of a smaller size item than 1 of the larger.
Shop the high shelves and the low shelves – the priciest items are usually eye level.
Instead of cold cuts, we are now eating left overs for lunch and the kids actually find they like it. Stay out of the deli dept., the prepared food dept, and get back to reparing everything yourself.
When I run into a great buy, I buy it and worry about where to store it when I get home. I have stored some odd things under the bed or in a coat closet, but who cares?

First, you need to familiarize yourself with the average cost of goods so that you’ll know a bargain when you see it. Many people keep a Price Book so that they can keep track of prices. I don’t have a lot of space either, but I do have a shelving unit full of canned goods in the back of a closet. When I see a bargain, I buy 4 or 5 items Anyway, here are links for Price Books and bulk buying.

Yes getting the sale papers helps. Look at the ads and plan your menus for the week around the specials. A lot of the coupons I see are to buy more than one and usually name brands. For me that doesn’t work because I don’t have storage space and also most of the time store brands are cheaper. I never see coupons for fresh fruits and veggies.
