What Do You Think About Hot Dogs For A Dog?

14 June 2009 631 views 28 Comments

I went to the store, and they had some great value hot dogs on sale for $1.14 for 40 hot dogs.
My dog has been sick, so I bought 80 hot dogs to stuff his pills in and make him do tricks.
Is this a bad idea? He loves them. He will do anything to get a slice of hot dog.

Thats a good idea. I know someone who feeds their dog wieners all the time. They don’t have to be cooked, but you can cook them first if you want. I have heard of people using pieces of wiener to train their dogs.
I should also say that was a great deal that you got on them. Where I live its $1.50 for 12. :)

If he has been ill a greasy fat filled hot dog is NOT a good idea. Besides the tons of fat there is also WAY MORE salt than a dog needs. If you want to hide his pills in something, buy a brick or block of cheddar cheese. Better yet, learn to give him his pills without treats or tricks.
Even for a healthy dog hot dogs are NOT a wise choice.

I wouldn’t recommend it your dog should be eating dog food. that might make him even sicker. I would consult his vet. I don’t consider hot dogs to be safe for people either but thats just me.

Hot dogs are bad your dog. You should avoid feeding your dog “people food,” especially not processed food like hot dogs.

I was told by a dog trainer that hotdogs are great treats for dogs. if you need your dog to do something and they are not coperating, you can use something really different like a hotdog and they will respond better.

My dogs get all of their pills in hot dogs- and we use hot dogs as bait in the show ring… I think they are a great treat. And there are times when we are so busy at the dog show that they have come in handy as lunch for us humans as well! LOL… but I am not kidding!

yuck…they got to be some nasty hot dogs @40 for $1.14……not that any hot dogs are good for dogs.
And probably why he weighs 95 lbs. much too heavy for a lab.
Edit: from AKC ….Approximate weight of dogs and bitches in working condition: dogs 65 to 80 pounds; bitches 55 to 70 pounds

I have been told by a vet to use hot dogs or cheese to get a pill in a dog. Its probably no the best food for them in general, but if it gets the medicine in its probably worth it.

my dear, its not like hotdog is made frm a dog meat. rite? it juz the name.. besides,ur dogs dont even know that wat he ate is ‘hotdog’.. even if he knows, u’ll be wise enaf to tell him,its from chicken/mutton …trust me.. cheers! =)

hot dogs arent very different to the crap that goes into dog food anyway…they are made up of parts of animals no one would et if it was just sitting there by itself…eye balls colons and other organs…dog food is made up of meat that is considered unacceptable for human consumption…so in a way hotdogs may be better…either way, if you are only using it as a treat and not a staple food in his diet, he will be fine.
just make sure you lower his food intake abit, he is a tad over weight and this is not healthy…so less food and up the excersize and you should have one happy dog.
the strong flavour is a good idea to use as a cover up for the medicine lol smart thinking (just dont use too much hot dog in a day as they do have preservatives, which eventually can build up and cause problems so keep it down to acouple of pieces)

Happy! 4 year old Lab, that’s a great age for a dog! I’d like to feed him myself! Hot dogs should help him get well, not harm him! Dogs like about anything, why not HOT DOGS it just his style and has his name! You take care! Have a good week! Jimmy.

I think it’s a great idea. Probably better than what is put in the cans of dog food from the store.

In small amounts they are fine. Too much and they will get the runs. I have used pinches of hotdog for dog training a lot with no bad effects. But if you do too much, be prepared for a doggie with a very unhappy tummy.

Of course, he loves them, and no, they won’t hurt him. Maybe spoil him, but not hurt him. My cat even loves hot dogs. LOL

I wouldn’t eat hot dogs, and I wouldn’t give them to my dogs either.. You ever seen weiners that have been in the land fill? They don’t break down for years and years and years.. They are so full of poison preservatives.. They should be illegal.

Honestly i dont know but i think feeding him too many hotdogs will cause him to get sick. they have a different digestive system then us.

Great idea! I couldn’t get my dog to take his pills. Asked my vet. He told me to put them in hot dogs. It worked like a charmed, and my dog loved it!

  • frenchyp said:

sure nothing wrong with that at all

  • Inground Pool Supplies said:

If you dog has been sick I wouldn’t feed them to him, you should have him on a plain diet of dog food, people food is really not good for dogs, also being a lab, they tend to put on a lot of weight, with all that processed ‘crap’ in the hot dogs, id say bad idea.

i feed my dog things like that she is a big dog but she is getting old and will not be round for long, i dont think there is anything wrong with feeding them hotdogs

  • Wordpress Amazon Autoposter Plugin said:

No it’s a great idea. I have heard of vets telling people to stuff their meds in hot dogs to have them eat them if they won’t. We give our labs polish sausages & they love them. It’s meat so it couldn’t hurt.
