Why Is Online Shopping Such A Compulsion For Me?

9 July 2009 72 views 2 Comments

I have abused alcohol and drugs in the past, and now shop for things I end up not needing or caring about in the long run. It makes me feel good when I’m doing it, but now I’m in debt and feel bad about it. My mind knows I have to stop, so why don’t I? Thanks for any insight.

The act of shopping stimulates the production of endorphins, producing much the same effect as drugs do, it gives you a high.
Addictive personalities crave this high. That is why you have trouble stopping.
What you should know is that the actual buying does not give you the same high. The act of “window shopping” is what does. So, if you can successfully browse without actually buying you will be taking a giant step forward!
Prolong your want. Don’t gratify instantly. This is one of the best things I have learned in life. Instant gratification gives too fleeting a pleasure, the pleasure is in the wanting. (and if you prolong that wanting long enough it will dissipate).
    Good luck!

You are addicted. You can be addicted to anything and it sounds like you have a very addictive personality.
Shopping actually makes us feel good, and it is so easy to buy things online, so it’s an instant gratification.
I think you need to find a way to channel your addictive personality into something that will help you in the long run and not hurt you.
Maybe, you have form of Obsessive Compulsive disorder. I would try to seek help though, because unless you are addicted to learning, any addiction can be dangerous.
